Costa Blanca Car Hire and Rent a Car Information

Car Hire on the Costa Blanca

If you can’t arrange for a friend or relative to pick you up at the airport to transfer you to your holiday rental / home, The best alternative is to rent a car yourself (the taxi service is overpriced as there is little or no competition for the local taxis), that can be taken and returned to the airport when you fly back home.

Cost of Car Hire on the Costa Blanca

The average weekly price for a five door hire car, with air-conditioning (very important!) and full comprehensive insurance is around 100 pounds. Remember to always ask for a discount for a second week, the third or a monthly price.

It is possible to share the hire car with a friend if you are going to be in Spain at the same time. However, this means you will have to pick it up and return it together, and both have to appear as the first and the second driver in the contract.

Children and Hire Cars on the Costa Blanca

Under the current law, children cannot be in a car without a baby seat or a booster, (depending on their age and size) but the good news is you can get them for free when booking your car.

Driving your Hire Car on the Costa Blanca

Even if you do remember to drive on the right side of the road, you may well be stopped by the Guardia Civil at any time in an ordinary road control situation. These are common and frequent, especially during the busy summer period. It would be an understatement to say that the Guardia are not particularly friendly folk so just be polite and smile. Make sure the hire car has in the glove compartment all the documentation about the car, the rental agreement and its insurance. You will also have to show your passport and your driving licence.

Some of the reasons to be fined by the Guardia are driving without wearing seat belts (including rear seat belts), using your mobile phone when you're driving, driving after drinking, driving faster than it’s allowed and faulty car lights. As a side note, it is compulsory to switch off your mobile phone in the petrol stations and in medical centres.

Costa Blanca Car Hire Safety Advice

Finally, follow the safety instructions your hire car company provides. Don't leave any of your baggage on show in the car; you could even go as far as to leave the glove compartment open when you park, to show that there are no passports or wallets inside. If unfortunately your hire car is broken into, the window should be covered by the car insurance but you will have to report the theft of your possessions to the Guardia Civil. It is compulsory to bring your own interpreter, the same as when visiting a medical centre.
